Mental Readiness, Mount Merapi Slope Families, Eruption Event.Abstract
In March 2023, Mount Merapi experienced an eruption by emitting hot clouds that made a number of areas of Yogyakarta and Central Java showered with volcanic ash, making the sky thick and the air full of ash. This condition has increased the awareness of the surrounding community to realize their position so that they can always be prepared when an unexpected disaster occurs. Several volcanic events that experienced eruptions, namely Mount Anak Krakatau in April 2020 experienced 8 eruptions, Mount Semeru from March-April 2020 experienced 49 eruptions until February 2021 is still on alert status, Mount Sinabung 27 times during January 2021 experienced eruptions, Mount Ili Lewotolok NTT during January 2021 experienced 2 eruptions, further making the importance of community preparedness and mental readiness in dealing with eruption events. The expected goal is to get an overview of the mental readiness of families on the slopes of Mount Merapi in facing eruption events. Qualitative research design with a phenomenological study, by means of in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions using an interview guide. The population in the KRB III area of Sidorejo village, Kemalang Klaten, selected families with a minimum of 10 years living in the village, who had experienced an eruption disaster with 36 informants, data analysis following the Colaizzi method. The results in supporting family mental readiness obtained 5 themes, namely (1) family experience in facing disasters, (2) government efforts in disaster management, (3) nature as family resilience, (4) social support in facing disasters and (5) coping mechanisms used by families in facing disasters. All themes are supported by sub-themes and categories, which are explained with quotes from the analyzed interviews. The conclusion is that the mental readiness of families on the slopes of Mount Merapi in the face of eruption has been described in expressions both in terms of family, community and government readiness.
