Abstract

Silek is the ancestral heritage of the Minangkabau people, one of the oldest tribes inhabiting the western region of Sumatra Island. The influence of Minangkabau Silek can be found in several other areas in Indonesia which bear similarities to the Minangkabau Silek style which is the core technique of all styles of Pencak Silat in Sumatra, in fact very few forms of Indonesian Pencak Silat are untouched by the Minangkabau Silek style. However, there is very little information about Minangkabau Silek, and it tends to be shrouded in various myths and mysteries. The information about the origin of Minangkabau silek comes only from tambo, namely the oral history of Minangkabau ancestral heritage which is often regarded as an imaginary story or a myth that cannot be proven true. In addition, Minangkabau Silek is considered mystical and magical knowledge because it is related to the Tarekat. This article aims to reveal the myth of Silek and explain the local wisdom and traditional values behind it. This research applies a qualitative study using the interpretation in formulating the research results with the research designs that were flexible and experienced developments in the research process carried out in field studies. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and literature studies. The results of the study revealed that Silek is a system of knowledge which teach a lesson on the management of body, mind, and spirituality that shapes Minangkabau personality. The knowledge system can be found in the concept of Silek as a self-defense skill, Silek as character education, and Silek as source of wisdom and science.
